My career in higher education culminated at the University of Bristol as Director of Student Services. I was responsible for the institutional strategy and professional services that support the residential life, wellbeing, health and inclusion of 27,000 students, including a GP-led NHS Primary Healthcare Service for over 20,000 students.

This provided me with extensive experience of working with senior executives and other key stakeholders to develop and lead a whole institution strategy to support student mental health and wellbeing. I also led and developed the large, complex support services that operated across the University, and in partnership with NHS and third sector service providers.

I served on the Executive Committee of AMOSSHE - The Student Services Organisation. I also advised on support for student mental health and wellbeing at the Universities of NUI Galway, Edinburgh and East Anglia, and was Chair of the World Universities Network Student Mental Health Working Group.

I have written on Supporting Student Mental Health and Wellbeing in Higher Education for a new book called Preventing and Responding to Student Suicide: A Practical Guide for FE and HE Settings due to be published in November 2021.
